Stakesy's 4.5" SHRINK-O-MATIC Shrinking Disc

Used for removing dents or lowering high points in bodywork by metal contraction. The friction of the stainless steel shrinking disc on the vehicle panel causes it to heat up. When this 'hot spot' is quickly quenched with water from a spray or wet cloth, the material will shrink to a smaller than original size which results in a lowering of the raised 'dent' or panel area. If the dent is inwards (concave), then it is first dollied out with a hammer or bullseye pick from behind to create a convex dent. This raised dent can then be worked on with the disc from above.

This type of dent removal technique has been used for decades with the use of oxy-acetylene torches. The torches are very difficult to accurately heat the exact area without affecting the area around it. Where the shrinking disc excels is in its ability to precisely hit the high points. With many passes, combined with hammer and dolly work, it it possible to obtain a paintable panel without the use of body filler.

Shrinking discs first appeared in the USA around 20 years ago. The first discs were a corrugated flat shape with razor sharp edges, were incredibly expensive and very noisy to use. Other discs we have imported and sold from the USA since have been pressed out with a flat face. Whilst we haven't invented this product we like to think we have made a few improvents where we saw problems. The flat discs available meant the protruding thread could cause more bad than good if it came into contact with the panel. Our discs are spun with a 15° angled face which allows the complete disc to be used over the panel without fear of spindle contact. The discs are made from a 16swg alloyed stainless steel and supplied with a spacer boss and 1+2mm shims to allow a perfectly flush fit of the tightened nut whilst allowing the original grinder guard to be left in place for safety. The side of the disc has a 7mm returned safety edge. The combination of this edge and the spun contact angle makes for a very rigid and stiff disc.

All 4.5" angle grinders use a 14mm spindle with an M14 thread. These spindles do, however, vary slightly in length and width of the spindle shank, thread and location step which can be seen in the attached illustration. To get the best concentricity (disc spinning centrally to limit vibration) it is important to choose the correct spacer boss.

90% of grinders from Metabo, Bosch, Black & Decker, Milwaukee, DeWalt and Makita will use our BLACK spacer boss which has the larger hole of the two available. We have found that some angle grinders, such a Ryobi, have a slightly undersize thread. These undersized grinders will need the GREY spacer boss which will ensure all tolerances are reduced, making the disc run central to the spindle and get the best experience from the product. If you don't have access to a digital vernier then choose the BLACK spacer. If you have various grinders you may want to choose both. Spacers are also available for £7.50 inc vat on a separate listing.

Whilst our shrinking discs will give years of use they are, in effect, a wearable part so we offer an exchange policy with a 25% discount against a new disc should you ever wear it out. (discount is based on current RRP.)
